Unfortunately, on the morning of the shoot the client had something come up and wouldn’t be able to make it. NO FEAR…we have photographers in most major US markets (Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Diego, and Washington DC)  so worked with the client to reschedule a session in the downtown Chicago studio.

Chicago based photographer, Andrew C., created a series on FANTAStIC headshots and portraits from which the client could select. It was NOT easy to eliminate images and make the final selection…but this is a great “problem” to have.  The images were used on the cover, as an inside spread and on the PROGRESS in Lending Association website as “Joe Dombrowski of Fiserv talks frankly about what servicers need to do today in order to really excel under difficult conditions“.

While I was archiving images from last week I noticed a pretty cool trend…every corporate headshot image we shot during the previous week was of a woman in business. We photographed a few lawyers, a scientist, a real estate broker, a couple of women in higher education and at least one Doctor.

The studio for a corporate headshot photographer can be a huge warehouse or a small office space...

All the sessions were fun for me, as I always try to learn something about and from our clients and these women all had their own story. Some of them liked being in front of the camera…some…not so much. Regardless of my subjects affinity or disdain for the camera, our job as a Philadelphia corporate headshot photographers is to create the best image possible.  We consistently lead our clients down a path to great imagery and effectively create a CONFIDENT and APPROACHABLE image that you’ll love.

A lot of people stress that a corporate headshot has to look POWERFUL and while that statement is true on a basic level there are other things that need to be addressed before power:

1. Is the image in focus?
2. Is the background distracting?
3. Do you appear trustworthy?
4. Does the image look like you?
5. Is the light flattering and clearly shows your face?

There are several ways of creating lawyer portraits that portray the lawyer’s true personality. If they have a particular hobby, you can take a photograph that includes some aspect of that hobby. For instance, if the lawyer likes knitting, get her to pose for the portrait with her knitting needles and wool. Lawyer portraits do not have to be headshots. A full length photograph of a lawyer will tell the potential client more about the lawyer’s personal style and sense of self than a conventional headshot will.

We can also use interesting locations in and around Philadelphia in order to make your firm’s business portraits eye-catching. Perhaps each lawyer could be photographed in their favourite place, be it the park, Boathouse Row, or their home. If each lawyer is photographed in a different place, it makes it easier for potential clients to pick up on each lawyer’s personality. This is especially important if you have a large law firm and it is hard to make distinctions between all the different lawyers.

If you want lawyer portraits that are more traditional, but still interesting, there are also several ways to produce such images. A lawyer could be photographed with his favourite law book in his hand. This gives potential clients something to look at apart from the actual individual and also gives them an idea of what type of law the lawyer specializes in and is passionate about. Similarly, a lawyer could be photographed in front of a whole library of books. Whilst this provides an interesting and unusual background, it also gives the lawyer-and the portrait as a whole-an air of distinction and gravitas. To make a conventional headshot more eye-catching, the lawyer being photographed could smile in it, or put her hands to her face. This also makes the headshot seem less imposing, as the lawyer will look far more approachable and friendly.

Lawyer portraits do not have to be dull. In fact, you are more likely to get the edge on your firm’s competitors if your lawyer portraits are different to theirs, than if you were to just follow the crowd and copy every other Philadelphia law firm.

Press Releases
Magazines, newspapers, news agencies and press release directories receive numerous press releases every day. Make your company’s press releases stand out from the competition by including an executive portrait in it. A photograph of the person the press release is about will give the story a more personal touch and make it seem more real to the reader. Such an image may also pique the reader’s interest in the individual, leading them to visit the company website in order to find out more about the person.
Social Network Avatars
It is becoming increasingly common for companies to set up profiles on social media websites such as Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn and industry blogs. Such profiles are particularly popular when a company director or CEO is personally associated with them and manages them himself. People like to think they are communicating with the boss whenever they interact with an organization or brand online. If you are an executive with a social network profile, make it clear to fellow users that it really is you by setting an executive portrait of yourself as your profile picture.
Annual Reports
Customers and potential customers like to read companies’ annual reports to find out what the business is doing and to check that their policies, procedures and financial accounts are all in order. However, annual reports can be very boring and impersonal. Add a personal touch to your company report by including executive portraits in it. For instance, you should definitely place a photograph of the CEO with her opening message at the start of the report. You could also include a picture of each individual alongside the list of board members and directors.

If you don’t own or a business and are not currently involved in one, executive portraits can still be used to your advantage. If you’re looking for an executive position within a company, consider putting an executive portrait of yourself on your CV or resume. When you send the send CV off to a potential employer organization or executive recruitment agency, this will catch the recruiter’s eye. It will also help persuade the recruiter that you are professional, providing, of course, that you look sufficiently professional in the photograph. At the same time, it will add a personal touch to the resume, helping the recruiter to put a face to your name. By knowing what you look like, the recruiter is more likely to remember you when deciding who to shortlist for the position.
Since your executive portrait can be used in so many different ways, it is well worth investing money and time into having yours done as soon as possible, for the sake of your company and your own career.

How to choose a good BUSINESS/CORPORATE Headshot photographer:

Find a headshot photographer whose portfolio demonstrates that they can take quality, professional looking headshots done in a style that you really like. It should go without saying that you should like the work of the photographer you choose to work with. You may not feel like a definitive judge of what makes a perfect headshot, but it is important that whichever headshot photographer you choose consistently demonstrates in their portfolio that they can take the types of photos you are looking for.

If you love a photographer’s style and the work they have in their portfolio, the chances are very good that you will love the work they do with you.
Bad, BAD DECISION…

Some photographers work hard at developing a particular “style” of headshots in order to “stand out” or feed their ego. The worst thing a photographer can do is to NOT LISTEN to the clients needs and wants.

However, there is an increasing trend by some headshot photographers to overly crop a photo. This means to cut off or exclude certain features of a subject, such as hair, foreheads, chins, ears, etc. In rare cases, this is perfectly acceptable. But in other cases, extreme cropping is a sure sign that your photo will end up in the trash and you will have wasted that time and money.
“Celebrity” Photographers

Whether it’s a photographer who is a celebrity or it’s a photographer who has worked with celebrities, keep in mind that it really doesn’t matter at all when it comes to your business headshot. A potential or former client just wants to see a friendly face. They don’t have any idea or even care about who the photographer has worked with in the past. So as much as the photographer themselves may impress you, all that really matters is the quality of your headshot. Even though we’ve worked with Fortune 50 CEO’s, Senators, Generals and many more, you should be sure to choose a photographer based on the quality of his/her work and not the CEO’s, Politicians, or other high ranking figures they’ve worked with.
